Billionaire chronicles: Waziri’s Empire episode 1

Moneymaker Name:        Alhaji Waziri Aliyu Waziri

Age:                                 52 years

Nationality:                       Nigerian

Industry:                           Oil & gas, construction, Banking and Money laundering

Net worth:                         $28.8 billion

Chronicle:

When Waziri was fifteen, his grandfather tried to teach him a valuable lesson on the value of diligence by giving him a small sum of money during his end-of-term holidays and promising him that if he could double it by trade (they were a family of merchants), he would in turn double the improved sum for him effectively quadrupling the initial sum of money. Where Waziri’s grandfather sought to teach young Waziri a lesson, it was he (his grandfather) who ended up receiving a lesson as Waziri simply borrowed the equivalent sum of money his grandfather provided from friends with a promise to share his profits with them, a proposition to which his friends gladly agreed as even at that young age, Waziri was already renowned as a man of his word.  Beguiled into thinking that his grandson had successfully doubled the sum of money given him by endeavour of trade, Waziri’s grandfather kept his promise and doubled the resultant sum enabling his grandson to keep his own word and share his profit with his creditors. When his grandfather discovered by happenstance the fast one his grandson had pulled on him, he marvelled above all at the boy’s gift of the garb. The kid had something that cannot be taught; recognition of what it would take to win in any situation by means fair or unfair and the intuition to know which means to select for every given situation. In this, Waziri was a mirror image of his own grandfather.

Billionaire chronicles: Toto’s Kingdom episode 1

Moneymaker Name:    Salvatore “Toto” Bergamo

Age:                             42 years

Nationality:                   Italian (half Greek by maternal descent)

Industry:                       Narcotics, fashion, hospitality and entertainment

Net worth:                     $16.8 billion

Chronicle:

Salvatore was born at a time when things were going good for his father and the family business which at that time largely involved running a shrewdly organized protection racket camouflaged just for the courtesies of appearance by a chain of 3- star hotels and restaurants. Gianluca “Gigi” Bergamo was a man after the heart of the boss of bosses. He was the quintessential mafia under-lord who respected deeply the wishes of his superior and never got too greedy as to warrant incurring his wrath. This was in the days of Salvatore “the Russian”, so called not because he had any filial links with Russia (it was rumoured he couldn’t even stand them and once killed a Russian drug baron for addressing him as his ‘brother’; none of these rumours were ever substantiated though) but for his obsessive love for the killing instrument that was the Kalashnikov assault rifle- the AK-47 as the world knew it. Salvatore the Russian was confirmed as having a bust-high statue of Kalashnikov on display in his private living room, the one where he received only his closest associates and where he had also had a few of them executed in the past after  being fingered on the wrong side of the Russian’s way. The problem was that no one except Gigi Bergamo knew what the Russian’s way was. Salvatore the Russian was a man who was as bewildering in comprehension as he was fearful. The ferocious called him a terror how much more ordinary men, to whom attainment of the heights of viciousness at which Salvatore the Russian reigned over his domain was not even possible in their dreams. Such was the terrible hand with which Salvatore conducted his affairs that it was a secretly whispered joke around the mafia at the time (never spoken to the Russian’s hearing) that Salvatore had as a baby been fed his own heart by his mother, so that now it were truly impossible for him to harbour any compassion; having already eaten his own heart.

Billionaire chronicles: Macca’s Dynasty episode 1

Moneymaker Name: Mish Abdula a.k.a “Macca”

Age:                          27 years

Nationality:                American (naturalized, Pakistani by descent)

Industry:                     Arms and armament

Net worth:                  $4.3 billion

Chronicle:

When Mish’s parents first came to the US, they were without any material possessions of any significance save for $150 that represented their combined life savings and the hope of likely shelter from Mish’s maternal uncle who had been in the US for over a decade before that time. Uncle Rio as he was called by Mish (his real name was Zubair but he had long stopped introducing himself by that name) was the one who became Mish’s true father when he arrived in the US a starry eyed six year old boy who was very shy and had an obvious accent when he did speak. It was uncle Rio who changed his name from Waleed to Mish despite his parent’s heavy protestations and displeasure. Rio made them understand that in the part of L.A where they lived it was always better to blend in rather than stand out as easy as your first name. Mish’s parents didn’t have much of a choice anyway, Rio was their benefactor and the singular reason they were able to get into the US in the first place. At that time, his ‘suggestions’ were actually law and Mish’s parents knew too well the peril of having too strong an opinion of their own. Rio had done well for himself in the local mafia, having risen from a starter to become the bosses’ right hand man; a position that ensured he had money and power in significant quanta according of course to the spectrum the local mafia operated in. Yet Rio wanted more, much more than his position could provide him; much more than even his bosses’ position could provide.

Age:                               38 years

Nationality:                     Chinese

Industry:                         Technology, enterprise financing

Net worth:                       $20.3 billion

Chronicle:

Growing up in the slums of Guangzhou city, Jason knew only two things. The first was that he hated school and the second was that he loved electronics. He just had this natural affinity for electronics and would spend his time taking apart and reconfiguring any electronic he could lay his hand s on. When he first discovered at age eleven, the mysteries embedded in computer programming code, he might as well have been injected with addictive serum. At sixteen, Jason dropped out of school to start his first tech business and never missed it but his first tech start-up was a colossal failure. So also were the next dozen or so attempts such that his father, a retired traffic officer who had spent the best years of his life waving on and halting all manner of automobiles from the luxurious to the ludicrous, without ever actually  owning one; told him (Jason) that his life was a wasted breath. In his early thirties, broke and in debt yet still highly defiant, Jason made a friend who was the son of an influential party member, a master of excess whether it was in alcohol, partying, women or crack but he still retained enough sanity to recognize genius when  he saw it. The unlikely duo formed a company off their partnership, each maintaining a fifty percent stake in the new venture although Jason had a buy-out clause for his partner’s stake inserted into their binding agreement. Their first government contract for an indigenous software solution for the public schools database followed shortly after and off that single contract, Jason made more money than he had ever made in his entire life. That was the beginning of a new life for Li xiānshēng.

A story of greener pastures

The rabbit and the lion in conversation one day argued about who between them had to endure a tougher existence. The rabbit adopting a safety first approach, was speaking to the lion from an enclosed space too narrow for the lion to come through, and he claimed that as one who was often the hunted, he had little peace of mind neither could he move freely whenever he wanted to without first looking out for his numerous predators. The lion laughed off the rabbit’s claims and pointedly told him he had the easiest life but just didn’t know it. The lion challenged the rabbit to swap places with him for just three days after which they could both assess which of them truly had the tougher existence. After giving it much thought, the rabbit agreed to the lion’s proposition. Three days later both met again, anxious to get their original form back. For the lion he said that he had never been as scared in his life as he had in his time as a rabbit as any and everything seemed a potentially grave situation and he hardly slept a wink in those three days. For the rabbit, he was glad to be back being a rabbit as he had never felt as slow and encumbered in his life before as he had for the past three days. Every movement was a huge effort and the constant need to roar for someone who preferred to keep a low profile drove him nuts. Speaking of nuts, he did miss them as he hated the taste of flesh. Being a lion was not much fun after all, except of course one was born a lion.

Liberation things

A story of freedom

A fugitive from the law was taken in by a widow who having a farm and two children to look after all by herself, needed someone to assist her regardless of his standing with the law. The fugitive was actually innocent of the crime he was being accused of, but unfortunately he had no one to corroborate his own side of the story. He had been accused of killing a man who used to be his friend but fell out with him over some unpaid debt. People had seen him threaten the deceased just days before his demise, so that when the deceased was found murdered, all hands pointed to his best known detractor. Seeing he was about to suffer heavily for a crime he did not commit, the man escaped from the law at the first chance he got, choosing to live free, a fugitive and accused, than be imprisoned with a clear conscience. The widow who gave him refuge, had learnt from the pain of her husband’s death that separation from a loved one was always best avoided where possible and she went to great lengths to keep her lover save from all. Years down the line, the truth came to fore and it became evident that the wrong person had been accused over the murder setting the fugitive free of the accusation that had hung over his neck for years. He never returned however as he had found a refuge in the widow’s bosom who had been his shelter in time of storm. Now that the storm was over, he chose to enjoy the peace with her as well never once thinking of returning home to experience liberty, as he now knew; it is first in our hearts that we become free.
